In the details

A small ritual

I set out a plate with your favorite bread, and a glass of cold water. The marigolds are bright on the table, their smell sharp and sweet. It's not a sad thing. It's like leaving the porch light on. A way to say: you are still part of the house.

Three observations for the occasion

I bought three loaves of pan de muerto, and two are already gone – I blame the living.
The cat keeps trying to eat the sugar skulls; I think she's ready for the holiday.
My neighbor put up a giant papel picado, and now my mailbox looks like a fiesta.

Said out loud

Words said aloud

On this day, we remember those who walked before us. We raise a glass to the ones we miss, and to the stories that keep them near. We are made of their laughter, their habits, their ways of folding a napkin. So tonight, as the candles flicker, let's share a memory and a drink. To them, and to us. To the thread that ties us all. Salud.
