carry what you need to let go.

In the details

The krathong, where it begins

You fold the banana leaf just so, press in the flowers, light the candle. The wick sputters, catches, and that tiny flame is the whole point. You set the krathong on the water and watch it turn once, twice, then start its slow drift toward the dark. It’s not about perfect form. It’s about the moment your hands let go and your breath goes with it.

the detail only you remember

Three observations for the occasion

The candle lasted exactly four seconds longer than the one on my birthday cake last year. Progress.
I almost tipped the whole thing over trying to get a good photo, but the river forgives even clumsy intent.
Somewhere downstream, someone’s krathong is now carrying the leaf I set adrift last November. Hello, stranger.

Said out loud

Words for the water

There is a lot you carry that you never set down — old worries, small regrets, the weight of being patient too long. Tonight, let the current take a fraction of it. Not all at once. Just enough to remember that you are allowed to release. I wish you a night that smells like wet earth and incense, a flame that doesn’t gutter, and the quiet certainty that wherever your krathong floats, it is moving away from you for a reason. Lift your glass. Drink to the water, and to yourself — the one who stayed, and who is still here to let go.

Crimea is not your address, but tonight the whole river is your home.
