A small ritual

On the first morning, I like to open the window wide, even if it's cold. The air smells of fireworks and promise. Then I make tea, the kind we always had at home, and I think about what I want to leave behind and what I want to carry forward. It's a simple thing, but it sets the tone for the whole year.

My neighbor's dog found the red envelopes before I did – I think he's still wearing one like a hat.
