In the details

The making of tangyuan

Flour on the counter, a bowl of warm water. You roll the dough, flatten it, pinch the edges. Sweet sesame or peanut waits inside. The water boils, and they float, soft and glossy. It's simple, but the kitchen smells like the whole holiday. You pass them round, and everyone holds the bowl a little longer.

Three observations for the occasion

Sticky fingers from the dough, and somehow the cat gets a flour mustache.
The red lantern at the window sways, and the neighbor's dog barks at it—again.
You save the last tangyuan for the one who's late, and they smile without saying a thing.

Said out loud

Words to say when the lanterns are lit

There's a quiet magic tonight. The full moon rises, round and clear, and we light these lanterns to carry wishes upward. Maybe we don't say much, but I think you know what I mean. These days go fast, work piles up, time slips away. So here's to the pause. To the warm bowl in your hands, to the people around you, to the lights that flicker and hold. May we find our way home, always, and may the brightness stay a little longer. Cheers.
