How to dedicate a song to someone, and what to say when you do
Dedicating a song means saying “this one is for you” and meaning it. It can happen on air, at a wedding, in a text or inside a card. Below are the main ways to do it, sample words to go with the song, and a few checks so the moment lands the way you hope.
Where you can dedicate a song
- On the radio. Some local and community stations still take requests and dedications by phone, text or their website. Check the station's page for how and when, and tell the person what time to listen.
- At a party or wedding. Ask the DJ or band ahead of time, give them the name and a sentence to read, and agree on the moment, for example right after the toasts.
- In a message. Send a streaming link with two or three lines of your own. The words are what turn a link into a dedication.
- In a card or letter. Write the title and why it is theirs, or print a QR code that opens the song.
- Live, yourself. At karaoke, at a family dinner with a guitar, or in the car. Say the name before you start.
- With a song made for them. Instead of choosing an existing song, have one written from your story; see below.
Three checks before you dedicate
- Read all the lyrics. Plenty of songs with a sweet chorus have verses about leaving, cheating or worse.
- Think about who else will hear it. A private joke works in a message; it may not work over a microphone in front of their boss.
- Name the reason. “Because it was playing when we met” makes any song personal. Without a reason, it is just a song.
Words to say with a song
“This is the song that was playing the first time you made me laugh. It has been yours ever since.”
“For you, because every time I hear this, I think of the drive to the coast.”
“I can't sing, so I'm letting someone else do it. Every word of the chorus is what I mean.”
“This one goes out to the person who stayed up with me the whole night before my exam.”
“Happy birthday. Put your headphones on, close your eyes, and think of last summer.”
“Mom, this is the song you used to play while you cleaned on Saturdays. I still know every word.”
“For my best friend, who has been the chorus of my life for fifteen years.”
“No reason. I heard it and wanted you to have it.”
A dedication that is built into the song
With an existing song, the dedication lives in what you say around it. With an artmoovik from Sendajoy, it is part of the gift itself: the private page opens with the person's name, then a painting appears stroke by stroke while a new song plays, and at the end your letter appears under the finished picture, with a numbered certificate. The song is written from the story you tell, or from lyrics you paste in yourself. Its words and music are made with AI tools; the painting is drawn by code; the letter is entirely yours.
Choosing the voice and mood for a written song
If you go the made-for-you route, you choose a voice (female, male, a duet, or no vocals) and a mood of music, with a play button for each mood on the order form so you can hear it first. Pick the voice that sounds like the sender: a duet for a couple, your own gender's voice for a song from you, no vocals if your letter should do the talking. Pick the mood that fits the person, not the occasion: a quiet person may prefer a gentle song even on their fortieth birthday.
Other ways to make a song personal
- Hire a musician to cover the song with the person's name in one line, or to write a new one.
- Record your own voice singing or reading the lyrics.
- Build a playlist where each song is a chapter of your story, with a note for each.
- Play the song in the place it belongs to: the beach, the old flat, the car.
What it costs at Sendajoy
A song and painting made for one person is $25, with a first sketch of the final frame within 24 hours and the finished work usually 1–2 days after you approve it. A ready-made piece from the gallery is $35: you add the name and your letter, and the link is yours right away. If a commissioned piece is not made, you get a full refund; if the first sketch is wrong, it is redone once.
Ready letters you can use
Paste one under the film as it is, or change every word — the letter appears at the end of the artmoovik, after the last stroke.
“I wanted to dedicate a song to you, and none of the old ones were quite right. So this one was written for you. It has the bench by the river in it, and the umbrella that broke the day we met. Every time you play it, know that it belongs to nobody else.”
“This song is for you, for every early morning drive to practice and every match you came to in the rain. I never said thank you properly. Consider this my thank you, with a painting so you have something to look at while it plays.”
“Some songs are about everyone. This one is only about us. Listen to the second verse; that is the night we got lost and found the best pizza in town. I love you, and I hope you play this loud.”
Questions
How do you dedicate a song on the radio? Find a local or community station that takes requests, and check its website or social pages for the phone number, text line or form. Give the song, the person's name and a short message, and ask roughly when it might play.
What do you say when you dedicate a song to someone? Say who it is for and why: a memory, a place or a feeling. One or two sentences are enough.
Is it okay to dedicate a sad song? Yes, if the person will understand why, for example a song that helped you both through a hard time. Read the lyrics and think about how they will feel hearing it.
Can a dedicated song have their name in it? With an existing song, only if a musician covers it for you. With a song written for them, the name can be in the lyrics from the start.
How do I pay for a made-for-you song? Payment is in USDT on the Ethereum network (ERC-20) only, for now.
